CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution recognizing April 18 through 25, 2015 as “Raritan River Week.”

Whereas, The Raritan River, a major river in central New Jersey, is formed by the confluence of its North Branch and South Branch in western Somerset county, and flows approximately 70 miles generally southeast past Somerville, Bound Brook, and New Brunswick into the Raritan Bay at South Amboy on the Atlantic Ocean; and

Whereas, The Raritan River provides numerous recreational fishing and boating opportunities to residents and visitors, and is used by the rowing team of Rutgers, The State University, in New Brunswick; and

Whereas, The Raritan River also serves as an important source of drinking water for the central portion of the State; and

Whereas, Over the years, numerous measures have been taken to reduce the pollution and increase the water quality of the Raritan River; and

Whereas, Since April 22, 1970, millions of Americans have celebrated “Earth Day” annually to raise public understanding of the complex relationships that exist between people, their daily activities, and the environment; and

Whereas, During the week of April 18 through 25, 2015, many New Jersey environmental and civic organizations will be holding various events to promote clean and safe waterways throughout the State to commemorate “Environmental Education Week” and “Earth Day”; and

Whereas, Just as the Raritan River connects towns and communities along its shores from its headwaters to the Atlantic Ocean, volunteer organizations, including the Raritan Headwaters Association, the Central Jersey Stream Team, and Clean Ocean Action, are working to connect their efforts to focus attention on the river, and during the week of April 18 through 25, 2015, residents will have opportunities to help clean up the river from its “headwaters to the ocean”; and

Whereas, It is fitting to bring attention and awareness to the Raritan River to promote it as an environmental and recreational resource deserving of protection and enhancement; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House recognizes the week of April 18 through 25, 2015 as “Raritan River Week” in New Jersey.  This House further urges the public officials and citizens of this State to observe “Raritan River Week” with appropriate activities and programs.
