SYNOPSIS

     Requires school buses to display telephone number to report unsafe driving.

An Act concerning school buses and supplementing Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  Every school bus, as defined in R.S.39:1-1, in operation on the effective date of this act and every new or used school bus purchased or acquired on or after that date shall have a telephone number conspicuously displayed on the rear of the vehicle for the purpose of allowing any person to report to the Department of Transportation unsafe driving or any motor vehicle violation committed by the school bus driver.

     b.    The Commissioner of Transportation shall adopt rules and regulations pursuant to the “Administrative Procedure Act,” P.L.1968, c.410 (C.52:14B-1 et seq.), necessary to effectuate the purposes of this act including, but not limited to, the development of a system for notifying the bus company or the school district that employs the school bus driver of the report of unsafe driving or any motor vehicle violation by a school bus driver when sufficient information is available.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect on the first day of the seventh month after enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires school buses to display a telephone number for any person to report unsafe driving or any motor vehicle violation committed by the driver.

     Specifically, under the provisions of this bill, every school bus in operation on the effective date of this bill and every new or used school bus purchased or acquired on or after that date is to have a telephone number conspicuously displayed on the rear of the vehicle to allow a person to report to the Department of Transportation unsafe driving or any motor vehicle violation committed by the driver.

     In addition, the bill requires the Commissioner of Transportation to adopt rules and regulations including, but not limited to, the development of a system for notifying the bus company or the school district that employs the school bus driver of the report of unsafe driving or any motor vehicle violation by a school bus driver when sufficient information is available.
