SYNOPSIS

Commemorates 100th anniversary of Planned Parenthood’s founding.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of Planned Parenthood.

Whereas, In 1916, Planned Parenthood opened its first health center in Brooklyn, New York; and

Whereas, A century later, the organization has grown to approximately 650 health centers across the United States, with partners in a dozen African and Latin American countries; and

Whereas, The first Planned Parenthood health center was founded on the idea that women should have the information and health care needed to live strong, healthy lives; and

Whereas, Today, Planned Parenthood provides high quality, affordable reproductive and preventative health care services to women regardless of their marital or economic status, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation and acts as a safety net for the medically underserved; and

Whereas, An estimated one in five women in the United States have received care at a Planned Parenthood health center, and for many people, a Planned Parenthood center may be the only place they can obtain the health care services they require; and

Whereas, In the past ten years, Planned Parenthood has nearly doubled their services to male patients and has expanded to provide health care services to members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual,  transgendered, and queer community; and

Whereas, Over the past 100 years, access to safe and legal abortions and other reproductive health care services have improved and transformed the lives of women, men, and young people in the United States and around the world; and

Whereas, Planned Parenthood has successfully advocated for measures that increase access to birth control, including requiring that private insurance plans provide coverage for birth control without cost sharing under the provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (42 U.S.C. § 18001 et seq.); and

Whereas, Planned Parenthood is also the largest provider of sexual health education in the United States.  Every year, Planned Parenthood health centers provide education and outreach on reproductive health to 2,500,000 women, men, and young people in the United States, and over 72,000,000 people visit the Planned Parenthood Internet site; and

Whereas, Through its global programs and partnerships, Planned Parenthood has provided information on sexual health to over 2,000,000 women, men, and young people around the world; and

Whereas, Planned Parenthood affiliates in New Jersey provide health care services to nearly 63,000 people every year, the majority of whom have incomes at or below the federal poverty level; and

Whereas, New Jersey Planned Parenthood health centers conducted 98,000 tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV tests, and 30,000 pap smears and breast cancer screenings in 2015.  Each year, the centers offer education and outreach programs providing sexuality and family planning education to more than 37,000 women, men, and young people throughout the State; and

Whereas, For 100 years, Planned Parenthood has helped lead massive changes in women’s reproductive health care, provided critical health care services to the medically underserved, and empowered millions of women, men, and young people in this country and worldwide to make informed health care decisions, transforming the way they live, learn, and work; and

Whereas, Planned Parenthood’s commitment to offer reproductive health care to women and provide basic health care services to the medically underserved, both in this country and around the world, has grown over the past century and is continuing to grow as the organization enters its second century; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House commemorates the 100th anniversary of the founding of Planned Parenthood and recognizes its commitment to offer reproductive health care to women and provide basic health care services to the medically underserved, both in this country and around the world.

     2.  The Governor may issue a proclamation calling upon public  officials and the citizens of this State to commemorate the  100th anniversary of the founding of Planned Parenthood with appropriate programs and events.
