SYNOPSIS

Urges NJ DOT to partner with global positioning system navigation mobile application companies to improve transportation and road conditions.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the New Jersey Department of Transportation to partner with global positioning system navigation mobile application companies to improve transportation and road conditions.

Whereas, Certain global positioning system (GPS) navigation mobile applications (apps) collect real-time information about traffic and road conditions when the app is open on a person’s smartphone and use that information to assist drivers using the app; and

Whereas, These apps allow a person to passively provide traffic and other road data through the person’s smartphone while driving and some of these apps allow a driver to actively report certain road and weather conditions, including accidents and potholes; and

Whereas, These apps are able to use the information gathered from its users to calculate the average speed on roadways and learn road and turn directions; and

Whereas, Some of these app companies have partnered with government entities to exchange information about traffic, road conditions, and road closures; and

Whereas, By developing a partnership with a GPS navigation mobile application company, a government entity can provide the app company with real-time and advance information on government-reported construction, accidents, and road closures and the app company can provide data to government entities including traffic jams and user-reported traffic incidents; and

Whereas, If the New Jersey Department of Transportation partners with GPS navigation mobile application companies, New Jersey will gain access to real-time traffic and road-condition data, be able to more effectively alert the public of road closures and traffic incidents, and help to reduce or alleviate traffic and other road conditions; and

Whereas, It is in the best interests of the residents of this State for the New Jersey Department of Transportation to partner with GPS navigation mobile application companies to establish a two-way exchange of transportation-related data and information to improve transportation and road conditions in the State; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges the New Jersey Department of Transportation to partner with global positioning system navigation mobile application companies to establish a two-way exchange of transportation-related data and information to improve transportation and road conditions in the State.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Commissioner of Transportation.
