SYNOPSIS
Makes escapees responsible for apprehension costs.

An Act concerning escapee apprehension costs and supplementing Title 30 of the Revised Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. Any person committed to the care and custody of the Commissioner of Corrections who escapes from that custody shall be responsible for the costs incurred as a result of the escape and apprehension of the escapee, including, but not limited to: wages; food, lodging, and travel costs; motor vehicle expenses; administrative costs; and court costs.
2. The Commissioner of Corrections shall be responsible for collecting the costs established in section 1 of this act if the escapee was confined in a facility defined in section 2 of P.L.1969, c.22 (C.30:4-91.2).
3. This act shall take effect on the first day of the fourth month following enactment.
STATEMENT
This bill requires prisoners who escape from the custody of the Commissioner of Corrections to pay for the costs incurred as a result of their escape and apprehension. Such costs include wages, food, travel and lodging, and motor vehicle expenses incurred by persons involved in pursuing and apprehending the escapee. Other costs escapees would be responsible for under the bill include administrative and court costs.
Under the bill, the Commissioner of Corrections would be responsible for collecting the costs required under the bill from halfway house escapees.
