SYNOPSIS

     Requires public school with any of grades 9 through 12 to discuss with students and parents employment opportunities as skilled laborer or through military enlistment or in agriculture.

An Act concerning career opportunity information for public school students and supplementing chapter 54E of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  A public school that includes any of the grades 9 through 12 shall ensure that a school counselor or teacher discusses with students enrolled in those grades and the parents or guardians of those students the employment opportunities available as a skilled laborer or through military enlistment or in agriculture.  In discussing military enlistment with a student and the student’s parent or guardian, the school counselor or teacher shall provide the student with information concerning the military enlistment test.

     b.    The Commissioner of Education, in consultation with the Commissioner of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, shall provide public schools that include any of the grades 9 through 12 with information on opportunities for employment as a skilled laborer or in agriculture and on the education, certificate, or apprenticeship that may be required to qualify for such employment.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately and shall first be applicable to the first full school year following the date of enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires that a public school counselor or teacher discuss with students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 the employment opportunities available as a skilled laborer or through military enlistment or in agriculture.   In discussing military enlistment, the school counselor or teacher will provide the student with information concerning the military enlistment test.

     The bill directs the Commissioner of Education, in consultation with the Commissioner of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, to provide these public schools with information on the opportunities for employment as a skilled laborer or in agriculture and on the education, certificate, or apprenticeship that may be required to qualify for such employment.
