STATEMENT
This bill provides for a supplemental appropriation of $240,000 to the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission. Established in 1989, the commission advises the Governor and the Legislature on Statewide activities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy.
The commission organizes an Annual King Holiday Commemorative Celebration each year in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. The commemorative celebration is the premier event in the State of New Jersey that honors Dr. King and brings together a diverse group of people to celebrate his life. The commission also develops programs designed to educate the citizens of New Jersey about the civil rights movement.
The $240,000 supplemental appropriation would enable the commission to continue to move forward with bringing communities together and raising public awareness of Dr. King’s ideals and philosophy.
