SYNOPSIS

Commends decision to move United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

A Senate Resolution commending the decision to move the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Whereas, President Donald J. Trump announced in December of 2017 that he is beginning the process of moving the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; and

Whereas, This move was mandated by Congress in 1995 but has been waived for national security reasons for 22 years, which the law has permitted; and

Whereas, The decision to move the embassy is an acknowledgement of an historical and political fact: Jerusalem has always been Israel’s capital city and seat of government; and

Whereas, The United States government is still open to a two-state solution that would have Israel and Palestine coexist as separate nations and that would respect existing borders between them; and

Whereas, The Israeli government welcomes the acknowledgement of Jerusalem as its capital; and

Whereas, The announcement by the United States government demonstrates its unwavering commitment to stand by Israel, which has been the United States’ strongest ally in the region since its founding in May of 1948; and

Whereas,   It is fitting and proper that this House commends the decision to move the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  This House commends the decision to move the United States Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

     2.  A copy of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the President of the United States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, each member of Congress from this State, and the Israeli Ambassador in Washington D.C.
