SYNOPSIS
Requires school districts to provide instruction on seizure recognition and first aid.

An Act concerning instruction on seizure recognition and first aid in schools and supplementing chapter 35 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.
Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. a. A school district shall incorporate age-appropriate instruction on seizure recognition and first aid for students in grades 9 through 12 as part of the school district’s implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. The instruction shall provide students with information concerning various epilepsy and seizure disorders, signs of a seizure, and how to give proper first aid to someone experiencing a seizure.
b. A school district may model the instruction provided pursuant to subsection a. of this act from an instructional program established by the Epilepsy Services of New Jersey, the Epilepsy Foundation, the American Red Cross, or any other organization or association with expertise in seizures and epilepsy.
2. This act shall take effect during the first full school year next following the date of enactment.
STATEMENT
This bill requires school districts to incorporate age-appropriate instruction on seizure recognition and first aid for students in grades 9 through 12 as part of the school district’s implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. The instruction provided under this bill would include information concerning various epilepsy and seizure disorders, signs of a seizure, and how to give proper first aid to someone experiencing a seizure. Instruction may be modeled after instructional programs established by the Epilepsy Services of New Jersey, the Epilepsy Foundation, the American Red Cross, or any other organization or association with expertise in seizures and epilepsy.
