SYNOPSIS

     Requires MVC to notify customers of availability of receiving electronic notification of upcoming expiration of certain MVC-issued documents.

An Act concerning certain customer notifications issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and supplementing Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    a.  Within 180 days after the effective date of this act, the commission shall notify every customer possessing a commission document of the ability of that customer, upon the customer’s request, to receive, in electronic format sent via electronic mail or text message, or both, a notice of the upcoming date of expiration a commission document at least 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to the date of expiration of that commission document and on the date of expiration of that commission document.  If a customer requests to receive electronic notification as provided in this act, the commission shall no longer be required to notify that customer of the date of expiration of a commission document by printed mail.  The commission shall provide on its Internet website information about how a customer in possession of a commission document may sign up to receive electronic notification from the commission as provided in this act.

     b.    As used in this section:

     “commission” means the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission established by section 4 of P.L.2003, c.13 (C.39:2A-4); and

     “commission document” means a valid: driver’s license; non-driver identification card; motor vehicle registration card; or motor vehicle inspection certificate of approval sticker issued by the commission or a private inspection center licensed by the commission.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (commission) to notify every customer possessing a commission document of the ability of that customer, upon the customer’s request, to receive, in electronic format sent via electronic mail or text message, or both, a notice of the upcoming date of expiration of a commission document at least 90 days, 60 days, and 30 days prior to the date of expiration of that commission document and on the date of expiration of that commission document.  If a customer requests to receive electronic notification as provided in the bill, the commission is no longer required to notify that customer of the date of expiration of a commission document by printed mail.  The commission is to provide on its Internet website information about how a customer in possession of a commission document may sign up to receive electronic notification from the commission as provided in the bill. The bill defines “commission document” as a valid driver license, non-driver identification card, motor vehicle registration card, or motor vehicle inspection certificate of approval sticker issued by the commission or a private inspection center licensed by the commission.
