SYNOPSIS

     Exempts parking spaces reserved for persons with a disability from meters or fees.

An Act concerning parking for persons with a disability and supplementing chapter 4 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    The State, county, or municipality shall not install a parking meter or charge a fee for the use of a parking space designated for use by an eligible person with a disability pursuant to the provisions of R.S.39:4-8, R.S.39:4-197, section 1 of P.L.1977, c.202 (C.39:4-197.5) or section 1 of P.L.1977, c.309 (C.39:4-197.6) or any other applicable law.  If a meter has already been installed, the State, county, or municipality shall clearly indicate that no payment is necessary for the use of the parking space.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill would exempt parking spaces designated for persons with a disability from meters or similar user fees.  Under the provisions of this bill, the State, a county, or a municipality is prohibited from installing a parking meter or charging a fee for the use of a properly designated parking space reserved for a person with a disability.  If a meter has already been installed, the State, a county, or a municipality would be required to indicate that no payment is necessary for the use of the spot.
