Recognizes 75th anniversary of establishment of State of Israel.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel.

A Joint Resolution recognizing the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel.

Whereas, The United Nations General Assembly paved the way to the creation of the State of Israel; and

Whereas, The 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence was observed on April 25, 2023, the 5th day of Iyar on the Hebrew calendar; and

Whereas, The search for freedom from oppression and discrimination and a new life borne out of the tragic ashes of the Holocaust led a people to advocate for a place to call home, the modern State of Israel; and

Whereas, While Israel has endured from its inception threats to its autonomy and security, the people of Israel have maintained the courage to build a vibrant, dynamic, and forward-looking nation that values cultural and ethnic diversity; and

Whereas, Israel continues to thrive in the face of adversity by sharing with the world innovations and achievements in agriculture, education, and technology, and advancements in solar, wind, and water power, music, and the arts, and by providing humanitarian aid internationally to people in need; and

Whereas, Israel shares a very special partnership with the State of New Jersey highlighted by the creation of the New Jersey-Israel Commission which has strengthened the area of economic, technological, and people-to-people exchanges to the benefit of each entity through agreements such as Choose New Jersey and the Jerusalem Development Authority Bilateral Business Cooperation; and

Whereas, The New Jersey-Israel partnership includes current educational institutional collaborations between Rutgers and Tel Aviv Universities, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Be’er Sheva’s Ben Gurion University, Rowan University and the Jerusalem College of Technology, as well as sister city relationships such as the ones between Jersey City and Beit Shemesh, and East Brunswick and Yavneh; and

Whereas, Israel has been a steadfast friend and faithful ally of the United States over the past seven and a half decades; and

Whereas, Given the close ideological, economic, and cultural ties between the State of Israel and the United States of America, as well as between the State of Israel and the State of New Jersey, the Legislature of the State of New Jersey finds it fitting and proper to recognize the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    The Legislature of the State of New Jersey recognizes the historic significance of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the independent modern State of Israel and commends the people of Israel for their remarkable achievements in building a new state and a pluralistic democratic society in the Middle East.  The State of New Jersey reaffirms the bonds of friendship and cooperation which have existed between New Jersey and Israel for 75 years and recommits to strengthening the existing partnership and supporting Israel in its quest for peace with its neighbors and the countries in the region.

     2.    The State of New Jersey extends congratulations to the State of Israel and its citizens on the 75th anniversary of nationhood.

     3.    This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
