A Joint Resolution respectfully urging the United States Congress to continue progress on the National Museum of the American Latino.
Whereas, The legacy of Latinos is deeply rooted in the very fabric of the history, democracy, freedom, and economic opportunities of the United States; and
Whereas, Latinos have played an integral role in America’s achievements and developments, with distinguished contributions in areas such as science, medicine, literature, art, education, the military, business, politics, athletics, film, and music; and
Whereas, Approximately 60 million American Latinos represent the largest ethnic minority in the United States and are projected to represent 25 percent of the nation’s total population by 2060; and
Whereas, While there are national museums dedicated to African-Americans and Native Americans, there is not a national museum wholly dedicated to American Latinos; and
Whereas, In 2020, Congress, with overwhelming bipartisan support, passed the National Museum of the American Latino Act establishing within the Smithsonian Institution a museum to be known as the “National Museum of the American Latino,” with the stated Congressional intent being for the museum to be located on, or near, the National Mall to the maximum extent practicable; and
Whereas, A National Museum of the American Latino will help foster greater recognition and appreciation for the contributions and experiences of Latinos in the United States as an essential part of our nation’s history and culture; and
Whereas, A National Museum of the American Latino will provide a space to celebrate the rich culture of Latinos; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The State of New Jersey respectfully urges the United States Congress to continue progress towards the creation of the National Museum of the American Latino.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly or the Secretary of the Senate to the President and Vice-President of the United States, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the United States Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, and each member of Congress elected from this State.
3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
