STATEMENT

This bill would appropriate $1,500,000 to the Division of Local Government Services in the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to fund a grant to the City of Newark to reimburse the city for costs incurred in responding to the November 26, 1999 crash of a single engine private plate in the Kent Street area of the Central Ward. In response to the crash, which killed four people (including all three plane passengers) and injured two dozen others, the city undertook extensive cleanup of the crash site, restoration of damaged residences and businesses, and relocation assistance to families whose homes were made uninhabitable.

In addition to the $1.5 million amount being appropriated, this bill would also appropriate additional amounts deemed necessary by the Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs if the City of Newark can demonstrate that its actual plane crash costs exceeded $1.5 million.
