STATEMENT

This bill appropriates $2.0 million to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for the design and construction of the New Jersey Fire Engine and Equipment Museum at Allaire State Park in Monmouth County.  These funds will provide for the construction of the museum to preserve the equipment and history of firefighting.  The funds also may be used to update the construction and design plans previously prepared for the museum.

The museum will house the collection of fire fighting apparatus donated to the State by Ernest N. Day.  Mr. Day began donating fire equipment and memorabilia to the State in 1963.  The collection, known as the "Day Collection," includes pieces of equipment and memorabilia dating back to the turn of the century and once belonging to New Jersey municipalities.

P.L.1973, c.378 authorized the establishment of a State fire engine and equipment museum, and provided for the creation of an advisory commission to select an appropriate site for the museum.  A site in Allaire State Park in Monmouth County was chosen as the location for the museum.
