SENATE, No. 2832

with Senate Floor Amendments

(Proposed by Senator RUIZ)

ADOPTED: JANUARY 11, 2021

      These Assembly amendments:

      1.   specify that students enrolled in institutions of higher education who have completed 30 semester-hour credits are allowed to serve as substitute teachers only if they apply between the effective date of the bill and June 30, 2023;

      2.   require the Commissioner of Education to examine issues and develop recommendations as to whether the timeline should be extended; and

      3.   increase the coverage provided by substitute teachers by extending the amount of time those individuals may teach in the same classroom during public health emergencies.
